Yes, it’s an investment, but worth its weight in gold! There is a feeling I get when I sit in front of my Hemingwrite that I don’t get from my laptop. When I sit in front of it the words just pour from my fingers. It’s almost religious. The machine is well made and stunning in person. There are more economical models and the brand itself is reputable and stands behind the quality of all their designs. However, I am boujee so I couldn’t resist the beauty of the Hemingwrite.

Do you need a Freewrite to write effectively? No. Does it help? For me, absolutely. The limited layout forces me to write (and keep writing) without endlessly editing. When I use the Freewrite, I judge my own writing less because the whole point is just to give myself material to work with later. (I otherwise tend to throw out drafts because they're not perfect.) Plus there's the cool factor--it feels great to type on it, and that adds a little bit of fun to the writing process. If you love to write, I highly recommend the Freewrite!
